Bhajji is Back!

It was a match which most thought would be well fought but the result would most likely be in the favor of England. With Indian skipper hinting at trying out the whole squad, many more joined the thought. Coming into the game, India had to fine tune a lot of areas, their bowling, the death overs in particular, fielding and to some extent, the batting as well given the tentativeness of their openers. England, on the other hand, looked a thoroughly professional unit during their last outing and so had no major worries or at least they might have thought so!

In his bid to try out the entire squad before the Super 8 matches, Dhoni took a brave call by resting Sehwag, Ashwin and Zaheer. The replacements being Harbhajan Singh, making his most awaited comeback, the leggy Piyush Chawla and a talented Ashoke Dinda. With Sehwag resting, Irfan Pathan found himself at the top opening the batting but could not contribute much. The good news came in Gautam Gambhir who finally found some form. The ever dependable Virat Kohli played a fine knock once again and Rohit Sharma played another good inning that helped India post a challenging 170 on the board.

The Englishmen though, took it too seriously and tried to play too many shots from the word go. Irfan made most of this intent as he picked 2 early wickets. It was the Spin time as Dhoni opted for Chawla and Bhajji making it spin from both ends and England batsmen had no clue where the ball was going! Bhajji got a wicket of his second ball when a top spinner cleared Morgan's middle stump and the rest is history. He went on to record the best bowling figures by an Indian in T20 Internationals. Chawla too had a pleasant outing with 2 wickets for just 13 runs in his 4 overs and it meant England were bowled out for 80, their lowest total in T20 Internationals.

Dhoni has a Happy Headache going into the Super 8s. Bhajji has announced his return like a Champ that he is and Ashwin and Sehwag are too good to be ignored and so is Zaheer. We will have to wait and see what team Dhoni fields against the Aussies in their first Super 8 match, but its not going to be an easy decision! For now, he can be happy about the pitches in Colombo that are helping spin and that India are to play all their fixtures on the same venue if they make it, will widen his smile a lot more!

Super Sunday!

Its World Cup Time!

It was meant to be an Action Packed weekend as South Africa were to lock horns against the hosts Sri Lanka and Australia were to take on the West Indies on Saturday. The rains, though, had different plans. After staying away from the tournament so far, it poured down heavily. We had the results for both the matches thanks to the (in)famous D/L method. The result of the SA vs SL was not that important given the fact that both the teams have already made to the Super 8s but the Aussies winning against the West Indies means Ireland also have a chance to stage an upset and make it to the Super 8 stage. Their chances are not really bright though as the big hitting Jamaican Chris Gayle did show signs of being in destructive form and Samuels ably supported him as they post a mammoth 191 on the board. Sri Lanka will also be wary of the tough oppositions they will be facing at the Super 8 stage and will keep their fingers crossed for a clear sky.

The Sunday also has a lot to offer as New Zealand will take on Pakistan and the Defending Champions England will play India. The NZ vs Pak clash will be a very important fixture again as it will be a decider for their group and Bangladesh will be praying for a New Zealand victory so that they have a good chance too.

The evening match between England and India will be for gaining confidence going into the Super 8s as both the teams have defeated Afghanistan in their first match. England looked more professional, thanks largely to Luke Wright (99* of 55 balls) who was ably supported by their bowlers who did a fantastic job to bundle out the Afghans for just 80. Indians looked a bit scratchy and they will have to rectify the errors quickly as this is a super fast tournament. The batting lacked the promise and the bowlers were all over the place. An opposition like England would hammer them if they continue the same sort of work! Dhoni will be thinking of playing a spinner more given the susceptibility of English batsmen against the spin and it will be interesting to see who it turns out to be. Zaheer Khan has to be on top of his game as he has always been his captain's go to bowler at a time of crisis. All said and done, it promises to be a Super Sunday indeed!

Off the Mark!

India were always the favorites in their tournament opener against Afghanistan. It turned out to be a battle between the Experience of the Indians and the Enthusiasm of Afghanistan. As Virat Kohli rightly said at the post match presentation, it was tough batting against an opposition bowling attack who had nothing to lose. It was an important toss to win and Afghanistan made the right decision to make India bat first considering their strong batting line up which should be capable of chasing down good totals.

Batting has always been a strength for the Men in Blue but the silence of their openers is a cause of worry. Gambhir looked out of sorts once again and was fishy against that outside off stump line as he dragged one on to his stumps. Sehwag, on the other hand, never got going. It was that man again - Virat Kohli. He came at the crease after the early dismissal of Gambhir and saw Sehwag getting out early too. He shouldered the responsibility with his classy cover drives, powerful straight drives and the magnificent strokes through the leg side as he scored another half century (a 39 ball 50 with 4 fours and 2 sixes). Yuvraj looked like making it big when he got off the mark with an effortless six but could not make it count as he was dismissed on 18. Raina looked a bit scratchy in his knock of 38 and it was the skipper, MS Dhoni, whose big hitting at the end (including a last ball Six) made sure India had a good looking 159 on the board.

Afghanistan began their chase with a positive approach and were 24/0 at the end of 3 overs. It was Lakshmipathy Balaji who delivered the first blow taking the wicket of Shahzad. Skipper Nawroz Mangal tried to steady the ship but it was Yuvraj's part timers that took the game away from them. Yuvraj took 3 for 24 in his 4 overs and was ably supported by Balaji who took 3 for 19. Mohammad Nabi did give Indians a scare when he played a cameo (17 ball 31 with 2 fours and 2 sixes) but it was too late as Indians kept on picking up wickets at the other end.

It was a good victory for India but certainly could have been better. The batsmen looked a bit uncertain at times and the fact that Afghanistan dropped as many as 4 catches also means that Indians gave them those chances! Zaheer Khan, their premier bowler, looked a bit off target as he went for 32 in his 3 overs. The seven batsmen strategy followed by Dhoni will be questioned more seriously as the tournament progresses and then we might have a toss between Balaji, Bhajji, Irfan and most probably, Rohit Sharma. The times will tell us what lies ahead. For now, the Indians can be happy that they've got off the mark but at the same time, they should be prepared for the challenges waiting ahead.

Let's Play!

Action Begins Now!

The focus is on the Island Nation. The local boys take on Zimbabwe to start the ICC World Twenty20 2012. Here are some quick facts -

All the matches will be played on 3 grounds namely R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Hambantota and the picturesque Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

There are 12 teams divided in 4 groups of 3 each as follows -
  • Group A
    • England
    • India
    • Afghanistan
  • Group B
    • Australia
    • West Indies
    • Ireland
  • Group C
    • Sri Lanka
    • South Africa
    • Zimbabwe
  • Group D
    • Pakistan
    • New Zealand
    • Bangladesh
Top two teams from each group will qualify for Super Eight stage. The top 4 will proceed to Semi-Finals and the winners will meet each other in the Finale on the 7th of October, 2012 at RPGS, Colombo.

The Contest

Barring Group A, where England and India are the favorites to do it, no one can be 100% sure about the top 2 teams qualifying for the Super Eight stage from the other groups. Ireland are no minnows and can give Australia and West Indies a run for their money. A fact that George Bailey's side is ranked below the Ireland in the ICC T20I Rankings just puts forward the struggle of the Aussies in this particular format.

Zimbabwe have shown how competitive they can be in a recently concluded triangular T20 series at home and the Proteas would definitely not take them lightly this time around. Sri Lanka will always have the Home Advantage but how they fare to the huge expectations from the home crowd remains to be seen.

Group D is certainly where the contest lies. Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh will all be looking for those two spots in the Super Eight. The Kiwis have always reserved their best for a tournament like this one, as the history will suggest. Pakistan and Bangladesh can do wonders on their days as well and hence, this group will have all the thrill to watch out for. So, let the drama unfold!

Warming Up - ICC T20 WC 2012

Its World Cup Time!

There's nothing more exciting than a T20 Cricket World Cup where a number of teams are tagged "Favorites". The 2012 edition of the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka will catch the eyes of cricket lovers around the globe when the Hosts will take on Zimbabwe in a Group C encounter on September 18th. This times experts are calling it the "Most Open Twenty20 so far" and it does promise to live up to this.

Right from the start, its been a format where you just can't predict a winner. Paul The Great Octopus might also have found if difficult given the fact that three different nations have gone on to win the title in the three editions. India, who were counted in the Underdogs, won the title during the inaugural T20 WC in the Rainbow Nation in 2007 followed by Pakistan, who fought hard to claim it the second time in England in 2009 and Finally (and I mean it) England won their 1st major Silverware when the drama unfolded in the Caribbean in just a year later in 2010.

World Twenty20 Champions - India - 2007

World Twenty20 Champions - Pakistan - 2009

World Twenty20 Champions - England - 2010

The Action now takes us to the island nation of Sri Lanka and this time, stakes are high for sure! England, the current World Champions would look to defend their title without their Man of the Tournament last season, Kevin Pietersen. KP's absence would certainly hurt England, especially when he had shown signs of being in great  touch before the so called controversial texts saw him out of his team, even if other players are saying that it won't. England would need a few heroics from players like Kieswetter, Bopara, Swann and Morgan to become the first team to win the trophy again.

Pakistan have always been a surprise package when it comes to cricket, be it any format. The unpredictable nature of this format gives them a chance to go the distance once again. They have players like Afridi, Ajmal, Gul and the Akmal brothers who can never be taken lightly.

The West Indies would also fancy their chances this time around as the Big Hitter from Jamaica Chris Gayle is back and back with a bang! They also have Narine who has done really well in this format in particular. The players like Dwayne Smith, Pollard and Dwayne Bravo add strength to their armory.

South Africa, a team that always shows the promise but fails at crucial junctures during the big tournaments, would look to wash off the "Chokers" tag. Their captain AB de Villiers has been confidant about his team doing well and why not? They have players like Kallis, Morkel, Steyn, Duminy to be confidant enough. Not to forget is the big hitting opener Richard Levi. If Levi fires at the top, he will be a headache for most opponents for sure!

Talking about India, they haven't really done well in a T20 World Cup after the inaugural edition when they clinched the title and they would certainly look to set it straight. The come back of Yuvraj Singh was a phenominal event. Both Harbhajan Singh and Balaji would also be looking to make most of the chance given by the national selectors. The key for India will always be their batting though. With players like Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Yuvraj and the captain MS Dhoni, they do look a formidable batting unit. Add to that an Irfan Pathan, who is having a dream comeback and the likes of Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary who must be eager to make most of every single chance given to them, and you have a very balanced side. Not to forget Ravi Ashwin here. He's shown a very good control in this format of the game and the recently concluded Test rubber against NZ would have certainly done him a world of good. India will also take heart from the fact that they have performed really well in Sri Lanka in recent years and the just concluded tour that they won comprehensively highlights this.

India won their first warm-up match against the Hosts with a thumping 26-run margin where Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni did a good job to post a competitive total on the board and then it was Irfan's Five-for ably supported by a 3 wicket haul from Balaji that sealed the match for India. So, very much a team performance we can say.

It was India vs Pakistan to follow. A warm-up game of course but when it comes to these two arch rivals, there's nothing such as warm-up. A very entertaining one indeed! Rohit Sharma once again batted well for his 56 and there was India's Youth Sensation - Virat Kohli with a magnificent 75* which helped India set a 186 run target. The bowlers, though, disappointed. Barring Ashwin, who bowled extremely well, everyone else was taken to cleaners by Umar Akmal, who once again produced a magnificent knock under pressure. His 92* along with Shoaib Malik's 37* made sure that Pakistan won it with their batting - their weak link!

For India, its not looking good. Bowling at the death has been an issue for quite some time now and the fielding could have been better. Lets hope they learn their lessons soon for its not a long tournament and there can be many more surprises to follow!
